• Consultation, diagnosis, and management of complex gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreatic disorders.
• Colonoscopy: Examination of the lining of the colon (large intestine) with a flexible endoscope (a tube with a camera allowing the colon to be seen on a video monitor). Colonoscopy is often performed to look for colon polyps, which may lead to colon cancer, as well as for other reasons.
• Upper Endoscopy (Gastroscopy): Examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine using a flexible endscope. Upper endoscopy is often performed to evaluate swallowing difficulties or frequent heartburn.
• ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography): Examination of the bile ducts and pancreas using an endoscope. Dye is injected into the ducts and x-ray pictures are taken. ERCP is often performed when a blockage of the bile ducts is suspected.
• Video Capsule Endoscopy of the small intestine: A capsule containing a small battery-operated video camera is swallowed. The person having the test wears a belt containing a wireless receiver that downloads images of the intestines as the capsule travels through the GI tract. Capsule endoscopy is often performed in cases of internal bleeding when colonoscopy and upper endoscopy have failed to find a source of bleeding.
• Liver Biopsy: A needle is inserted into the liver to obtain a small piece of liver for analysis. Liver biopsy is often performed to evaluate people with laboratory tests indicating liver disease.
• Treatment of hepatitis B and C: Several million people in the United States have either chronic hepatitis C or hepatitis B. For many of these people, these infections can lead to liver failure or liver cancer, usually over a period of decades. Treatment of these conditions is continually changing. Decisions whether to treat and how to treat are best made by consultation with practitioners with expertise in these diseases. Our doctors stay current with the latest developments in treatment of these conditions and we have participated in research trials in both these infections.
